Decades of Elegance Summer Look-Back

Hello my dearest, I hope you are having a lovely summer week so far!  I am very excited as I have just found my camera, after having lost it about three months ago!!  And no, I don’t know how it ended up behind the fridge, but I will make sure to put it to great use again.

Vintage 1950s Necklace i Multi Colours

I have had an admin day today with my photos and thought that a little look-back at these past few years was in place!  In the photo above I am wearing one of my own favourite pieces – a 1950s costume jewellery necklace that my dear sister gave me for my 30th birthday.  She envisaged me wearing it with a white dress, and so for her 30th birthday party this is what I ended up in – a white silk and lace dress by Haiku Kimono.

And at her 30th birthday party my sister then wore this Decades of Elegance Art Deco onyx and marcasite ring, and she paired it up with a white shift dress in silk by Haiku Kimono and her hair so beautifully half up half down with a black bow.

And of course there was this glorious Leopard bracelet, vintage style and also Cartier style – you might know how beautifully Cartier designs their leopard jewellery pieces, and this one always makes me think of their designs!

I would love to hear about your favourite summer styles and what vintage or antique jewellery you wear at the moment, so please email me a photo and write a few lines: info@decadesofelegance.com

Happy Summer!

Looking back at our February Brooch Wearing Challenge

Opal and Diamond Brooch from Richard Ogden in the Burlington Arcade

Opal and Diamond Brooch from Richard Ogden in the Burlington Arcade – we adore!

What a lovely month February has been!  I wasn’t sure what I was getting myself into when I started the Brooch Wearing Challenge a month ago, but it turned out to be such a wonderful little jewellery journey, with so much positive feedback – and so many fabulous brooches!

Vintage SIlver and Marcasite Brooch, Decades of Elegance

A friend of mine who is a beautiful opera singer was really excited to hear about it, and said that she always struggles to find brooches that will go with her performance outfits.  “A brooch is perfect to fasten a scarf with over an evening gown, but you just don’t see them around these days!”  Fortunately I was able to direct her to the vintage fairs and antique shops for some stunning brooches that are just waiting to start a new life with a new owner!

Vintage Cameo Brooch from Decades of Elegance

One of our lovely readers shared her vintage cameo brooch with us, from Decades of Elegance

Another way to wear a cameo brooch

It has also been lovely to talk to vintage and antique dealers who sell brooches, as they often have an abundance of brooches and know so much about them – and can give you great tips as to how they could be worn!

And this little experiment has also reinvented a bunch of my own outfits, as they go through such a transformation when a brooch is added!

From the blog post Day 2 of the Brooch Wearing Challenge – Vintage Chanel Brooch And what better way to revive some old Hollywood glamour, than wearing a vintage Chanel brooch and red lipstick – as shown here by another one of our lovely readers?

So thank you all for taking part in this lovely challenge in so many different ways.  And it doesn’t of course stop here – feel free to send over your photos of you wearing a brooch whenever you like so that we can all enjoy a bit of beautiful jewellery and get some new style ideas!

How to wear an Onyx brooch

And so we have reached the last day of our February Brooch Wearing Challenge – except that I will prolong it by making a compilation of all the styles in Wednesday’s post!

Black Onyx Brooch worn with a Blouse

These photos of a brooch worn with a blouse were sent to us by our lovely Indian Princess S, who previously modelled some glorious pieces for us: Your Secret Jewellery Collection – the Indian chapter part I and Your Secret Jewellery Collection – the Indian chapter part II.

Black Onyx Brooch worn with a Blouse

A closeup of the lovely brooch worn with a Peter Pan-collar blouse

She is wearing a black Onyx brooch in a cluster design, a brooch style that was very popular in the 1950s.  You will be able to see for yourself the next time that you visit a vintage fair, as there will be cluster brooches covering the jewellery stalls!  Just to give you an idea, this is a snapshot that we have seen before, from Arabella Bianco – and you can count the brooches that resembles the one above:

As for the stone Onyx, it is believed to help relieve fears and worries, and to make you feel comfortable in yourself and in your surroundings.  It is also thought to keep strong emotions and passions at bay, as it promotes self control (1).  Furthermore, it helps give a positive outlook on life – how wonderful indeed!

So my dear, take out those old brooches that have been sitting at the back of your jewellery box, and reinvent them!  On Wednesday we will take a look at all the different styles that we have seen here on the blog throughout February, and hopefully you will get buckets of inspiration on how to wear your own in the most fabulous way!

And so it is time to report back from this year’s very first Frock Me! Vintage Fair at Chelsea Old Town Hall!  You guys – it was such a wonderful day and I wanted to buy everything, I am not even joking!!  We had afternoon tea and everything, but I will start out by telling you about two designers that I met there: Skinny Rich Fairies and Naomi Tate.

Floorlength dresses from Skinny Rich Fairies at the Frock Me! Vintage Fair at Chelsea Old Town Hall

A fabulous mix of vintage and new dresses at Skinny Rich Fairies

I don’t know how much time I spent at Skinny Rich Fairies, as I was drawn to one glorious dress after another.  You can see in the photos above that many of them are so very Game of Thrones – think Khaleesi and Shae’s off the shoulder gowns.  There was a lovely mix of new designs and vintage items:

Stunning blue and white dress from Skinny Rich Fairies at the Frock Me! Vintage Fair at Chelsea Old Town Hall

I am still dreaming about this blue and white creation – it would present the most flattering silhouette…

In the same stall they had teamed up with Naomi Tate, who specialises in vintage chokers and cuffs and I am sure that you can imagine how beautifully the dresses went with these extraordinary accessories.  The cuffs would go so well with the grecian dresses, and create a goddess look that would leave even Helen of Troy herself green with envy…

I am getting to try on one of the glorious designs from Naomi Tate

Naomi Tate is a former ballerina and actress, and the cuffs and chokers that she designs – using antique and vintage beads, crystals etc – breathe an air of elegance and grace that inevitably draws your thoughts to dramatic scenes at the theatre.

Antique beads and jewellery are given new life in Naomi Tate’s designs, like this beautiful cuff

On her website Naomi suggests wearing the designs with everything from jeans to formal wear, and I can definitely see how that would work.  The cuff that I am trying on the photos above features 17th century beads and it would add such a stunning touch to any boho chic wedding dress.  Do pop by Naomi’s shop on Portobello Road dear, and you will see for yourself!

And don’t think that I have forgotten about the Brooch Challenge!  Here is the brooch that I wore on the day – I am very much into the white, cream and ivory colours at the moment, as I just can’t do black day in and day out during the winter!  So I wanted to match my light coloured outfit with something romantic and sweet, and ended up going for the gold brooch with a pearl and rhinestones that you might remember from before.

Day 2 of the Brooch Wearing Challenge – Vintage Chanel Brooch

Our first contribution to February’s Brooch Wearing Challenge has arrived in the Decades of Elegance inbox!

Vintage Chanel Brooch, Red Lips, Marilyn Monroe style

A vintage Chanel brooch worn with a white shirt and red lips – and we adore!

It comes to us in the shape of a glorious vintage Chanel brooch, and is modelled by the lovely Lady N who you might remember from the blog post: The 1920s sparkling bracelet that started it all…

Vintage Chanel Brooch, Red Lips, Marilyn Monroe style

Red lips are just the most fabulous way of adding a touch of class to your look

I just love the style: for blondies red lips are ALWAYS a good idea!  And coupled with the Chanel brooch it looks even more fabulous, as this is how the starlets would accessorise their outfits back in the golden days of Hollywood.  The pink blouse, red lips and the brooch below made me immediately think of Marilyn Monroe in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, such a classic style that would take you from a day in the office to a cocktail party in the evening!

Vintage Chanel Brooch, Red Lips, Marilyn Monroe style

Vintage Chanel brooch and a pink blouse – doesn’t this immediately make you think of Marilyn Monroe in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes?

I am starting to get some wonderful inspiration for a party next week..!  But I can’t decide whether I love her white or the pink outfit more – which one is your favourite dear?

Aladdin’s Cave at Christique Antique Centre

Christique Vintage Jewellery and Clothing Dorking, Surrey

A stunning old picture, ca 1920s, that so beautifully overlooks the vintage jewellery

So I spent a lot of time in Dorking last week, going through the never-ending treasure troves that are the antique and vintage shops: I visited two divine afternoon tea cafés and found the most glorious vintage glassware in the shape of champagne coupes and wine glasses.  I had a reeeeeally long wander through Christique Antique Centre, as around every corner you find something new that you just HAVE to have!  Love it.

Christique Vintage Jewellery and Clothing Dorking, Surrey

Rummaging through these cabinets and imagining what stories the vintage pieces would tell if they could speak…

I will write a few posts on Christique and I wanted to start out by taking you to their vintage clothing and accessories section, which is located up a winding staircase in which you will bump your head in the low tudor style ceiling if you are not careful!  It is all part of the charm!!

Christique Vintage Jewellery and Clothing Dorking, Surrey

An old wedding dress just waiting to be worn again – pretty sure you could find a whole outfit for your wedding in this shop – check out the fabulous gold heels on the right!

In there you just want to get dresses up in one of the beautiful gowns hanging from the rails, drape some pearls around your neck and wear lots of red lipstick, 20s style!

Christique Vintage Jewellery and Clothing Dorking, Surrey

Just one of the rails with beautiful pieces of vintage clothing.  I would recommend going to a vintage shop to buy for example a dress if you are going to a wedding.  It is just lovely to see the exquisite designs and also knowing that no one else will wear the same dress!

Christique Vintage Jewellery and Clothing Dorking, Surrey

You can spend hours sifting through the clothes here… and yes, I know that vintage furs are a hot topic – is it alright to buy them or not?  Would be interested to hear your thoughts on it… would you wear vintage fur?

Christique Vintage Jewellery and Clothing Dorking, Surrey

Diving in, head first into this glorious treasure trove of vintage jewellery and accessories!

I have a couple of weddings coming up this year, so I am definitely coming back here for some fabulous accessories that will go with my dresses!  I am quite tempted to wear a hat but I will be travelling quite far for both weddings, so might have to give that a miss… but when one tries on these beauties it is hard to think rationally!

Jewellery Collection Essentials

Hello dear!  So I have come across quite a few blog posts on the topic Your Wardrobe Essentials – you know the usual drill of  ‘a crisp white shirt, a black pencil skirt, a pair of skinny jeans, a pair of black trousers, the perfect white t-shirt, a black cardigan, a trench coat’ etc.  How very not exciting I say – and would like to introduce to you my take on ‘Your Jewellery Collection Essentials‘!

Blue topaz earrings vintage style

A pair of my jewellery wardrobe staples – a pair of blue topaz beauties, vintage style from South Africa

These are all pieces that I have found myself using on a regular basis, and of course, if you decide to invest in any of these items I would encourage you to go for vintage or antique.  When you look through your jewellery collection to see what pieces you already have, remember to include jewellery that you have inherited from your grandmother(s).  These often become the most treasured ones, and even though you might want to keep them safe and locked away, keep in mind that they were made to be worn, loved and admired!

Frock Me! Vintage Fair

Make a list in your head of the pieces of jewellery that you know that you will be using on a regular basis, and when you get to your next vintage jewellery fair or shop you will know what you should look for!  The above photo is from the Frock Me! Vintage Fashion Fair

1. Pearl Earrings

By adding a pair of (in my case preferably white) pearl earrings to your outfit, you can transform a whole look!  A plain office outfit becomes all that more sophisticated; a little black dress gets an air of Audrey Hepburn elegance; and a cocktail dress becomes oh so glamorous!  It is my firm opinion that pearl earrings are a must in every girl’s jewellery wardrobe.  You can vary the sizes so that you have a pair of smaller pearls as well as the larger ones, as different sized pearls bring different looks to yours outfits.

2. Pearl Necklace

This one goes hand-in-hand with the pearl earrings and I just love wearing pearl earrings and a pearl necklace together.  Try to match the sizes of the pearls in the earrings and necklaces for good balance – but have fun while playing around with them!  I just love the Sex and the City movie scene where Carries tries on the Lanvin wedding dress (Google search for it here) and that big, chunky pearl necklace!  Not to mention when she is draped in pearls with the Christian Lacroix dress! (Google results here)

3. Gold Earrings

For an outfit in warm colours, gold jewellery is just such a wonderful choice.  Either go for small golden earrings or a pair of golden earrings with a small stone, for example a turquoise, diamond or even a pearl.  I tend to keep my everyday earrings quite small so that they match a simple and elegant necklace – without stealing the show!

4. Gold Necklace

Something elegant and understated that goes with your golden earrings.  The beauty here is that you have a sea of different styles to choose from: will you choose a gold pendant or a small sparkling stone that complements the gold?  Or a necklace where the chain is the main detail?  I have always known that gold chain necklaces don’t suit me, so judge by my dread when I was asked to try one on in the shop the other day to show a client!  I was then so surprised to see that it actually suited me, and that I liked the look!  So again, have a play around with the different styles as you might get surprised as to what suits you best!

3. Silver Coloured Earrings

Silver, white gold and platinum are especially perfect when you wear an outfit featuring cold colours (blues, greens etc) but they do of course go very well with everything.  Silver coloured earrings that come with a bit of sparkle, such as diamonds or Swarovski crystals, are always a lovely choice.  I tend to go for the smaller ones as I love the subtle glitter, and they are perfect for matching up with a pretty silver necklace.

4. Silver Necklace

You can either go for a classic silver chain necklace, one with a silver details or something with a small sparkling stone.  I have found that I don’t wear sets very often – pre-matched jewellery – but I tend to mix and match my pieces so that my earrings for example carry a bit of sparkle, while the necklace is then just plain silver, like my Tiffany bow below:

Vintage silver necklace with sparkle

Tiffany & Co silver bow necklace

5. Bracelet

When it comes to bracelets the choice is a bit wider: you don’t wear the bracelet right next to the rest of the jewellery so do play around a bit more with colours, metals and stones.  For example, if I am wearing gold jewellery I often wear my great aunt’s Kalevala bracelet – an old Finnish design in brass, in the far right photo below.  Kalevala is a fascinating brand so we will come back to that in a later post!

6. Rings

Rings are such fun and there are so many different styles to mention:

  • Cocktail Rings, my favourite rings that keep coming back here on the blog as they are sooo gorgeous and fun to play around with:
  • For those of you who are married or engaged I am sure that your Engagement Ring and Wedding Ring are the biggest parts of your jewellery-outfit.  And yes, I am still planning to write a guide to buying a vintage engagement ring one day, so watch this space!
  • A friend of mine brought to my attention to the beauty of wearing lots of elegant silver rings, and you might remember that I recreated the look in an older posts: Knitted Gloves and Silver Rings.
Knitted cut off gloves and Silver Rings

Have a play around with you rings and pair them up with something unexpected, like a pair of old cut-off knitted gloves

6.  Statement Necklace

It is always a good idea to invest in a statement necklace that goes with many different outfits – which is not very hard as this piece is meant to stand out!  It means that you can be bold with colours and don’t hold back on the sparkle!

I hope you enjoyed this alternative version of wardrobe essentials and I would love to hear what your jewellery essentials are?  Do you have a special piece of jewellery that you wear every day?

Michelle Lindsell Wedding Photographer in a Midwinter Night’s Tale

I had the privilege to work with creative wedding photographer Michelle Lindsell the other day and I have so been looking forward to bringing you her beautiful work:

Iida Heikkinen Midvinternatt Michelle Lindsell Photography

Michelle Lindsell Photography for my album Midvinternatt

We worked together on my Christmas album Midvinternatt.  Midvinternatt means Midwinter’s Night in Swedish, and for the photo shoot I decided to wear my very favourite vintage midnight blue dress from Vintage Shrewd.  It was an absolute joy to work with Michelle – she gave me such brilliant instructions on what to think about to get a certain sentiment in the photo and how to stand to bring out the best in the dress – very important!  I also love how she was able to pick a clearing in the forest in Barnes, London, that turned out to be the perfect backdrop to the photos!

Michelle is first and foremost a creative wedding photographer and having known her for many years I can only vouch for what a romantic she is, and how perfectly she has found her calling in life, eternalising people’s most romantic moments!  You will see in her photos that she has a way of capturing the stillness and love during a couples’ wedding day – a day that is so often characterised by excitement and buzz.

I also love how she captures and presents the fun and joyful moments, to that make you feel as though you were present at the very second that the photo was taken:

So to all you lovely brides-to-be who are looking for a wedding photographer; take a look on Michelle’s website and see if she might in fact be your dream catcher.

And if you are curious to take a closer look at my Christmas album, you can find it on iTunes: Iida – Midvinternatt,  There are five tracks on it; a bit of Christmas love from Finland, some from Sweden and a few beloved songs that you might recognise.  Merry Christmas dear!

Christmas Gift Ideas and the beauty of Vintage shopping

Vintage Shrewd Dorking Surrey

Most fabulous collection of vintage clothing and accessories at Vintage Shrewd in Dorking

So it seems like the trend for Christmas shopping this year is choosing sustainable and environmentally friendly presents, which I think is lovely, with vintage and antiques being just what we were looking for!

I visited Vintage Shrewd yesterday – yep, they are also open on Sundays throughout December – and I found a million things that I wanted to buy!  There was a 1960s minidress in bold colours and patterns; a 1940s evening dress with the most delicate buttons at the back; and everything from vintage clutches and handbags to pretty sleepwear and gorgeous coats!

The most beautiful vintage evening dresses at Vintage Shrewd

Just take a look at all the beautiful vintage hats and accessories in the top photo – you are bound to find the perfect present among these!  And the vintage evening dresses above were to die for – I tried on the canary yellow dress to the left and it was the most stunning 1960s piece!  A little bit too big for me, but the right lady will enjoy it for many many years to come.  And how about the red dress to the top right?  Ahhh can someone throw be a party so that I can get all dressed up in an evening dress!?

Vintage Shrewd

Some fabulous night attire from Vintage Shrewd

One of my favourite things when it comes to buying vintage is knowing that the person who receives the gift gets something unique.  Their dress won’t be worn by three others at the Christmas drinks, and their handbag won’t adorn every arm on the streets of London, Stockholm, Helsinki and Cape Town!  The fact that the price is just a fraction of what we pay for contemporary fashion and the quality a million times better are obviously just huge bonuses.

I love these little guys – so very retro!

I loved this little collection of Christmas brooches – such a fun little talking point when worn to a Christmas party, maybe securing a lovely scarf around your neck…

So let’s take the opportunity this Christmas to encourage our independent vintage and antiques shops, by buying our Christmas presents there.  Shopping with a good conscience is always a treat, and for me this is definitely one way of making that happen!
