A sunny walk to Portobello Market

Hello my dear, today I would like to take you on a very peaceful wander around Portobello Market, where we will be accompanied by the most glorious afternoon sunlight:

Victorian buildings in Notting Hill

Just one of the beautiful Victorian terraced buildings in Notting Hill

I tend to stray off the beaten track and take in all the beautiful Victorian terraced houses on the side roads of Portobello Road.

I stopped by a stand with the most curious collection of vintage and antique books: Books Calling (the link takes you to their eBay store).  There were lots of beautiful first editions and quirky vintage books, for example the book in the photo above: Keeping a Dog from 1961!

Portobello Market really is one of the best places to go for birthday presents, as you can be sure that no one else will be bringing the birthday child the same thing.

At the next stand I admired the pocket watches that you can see above.  I do love how the afternoon light plays with them and lights up their pretty little faces.  There were just so many lovely things to look at, and it is so nice to know that if you have any questions the traders are always there to help.

The food market was ever so alluring with freshly baked croissants, cheeses from around the world, fresh vegetables and fruit… I would so warmly recommend that you visit the market either on a Friday or a Saturday in the spring!

Decades of Elegance Loves…

Good morning to you lovely one!  During the course of our journey here on Decades of Elegance we have dived into the most beautiful antique shops, markets and fairs and attended exciting auctions, which has resulted in an extensive and fascinating collection of vintage places to visit.  To give you the chance to plan your trips to the most fabulous ones we are now launching a ‘We Love’-page, which you can find at the top of the blog:

All these wonderful places are categorised under Antique / Vintage Shops, Fairs, Auctions, Eat and Drink, Weddings and Afternoon Tea and under these you will find geographical listings of: Brighton, Cape Town, London and Surrey.  Eventually we will include Stockholm and any other fabulous cities that we rate highly for antique and vintage shopping.  The page will also be updated on a regular basis with new, glorious places to visit.

To give you an idea of what you will find on this page, we are travelling back in time today and visiting a small selection of shops from our We Love-page (all the links below will take you to the blog posts about each shop – on the We Love-page the links will take you to the shop’s own websites).

Let’s start out at the spectacular vintage scene in Brighton:

Kate & Aud Vintage Shop in Brighton

Exciting finds at Kate & Aud in Brighton

… and continue to the sunny coasts of Cape Town, where we were mesmerised by The Jewel Tree‘s sparkling collection:

We have visited the hustle and bustle of Spitalfields Market, where we indulged in stunning pieces from Arabella Bianco, not to mention the gorgeous designs by Titania Fisher at the Pop Up Vintage Fair:

We have ventured out on the gorgeous English countryside to the antique town of Dorking, where Chantecleer Antiques and Christique Antique Centre bring us antiques in the most perfect condition, and where Vintage Shrewd gets a well-deserved 55th spot in Vogue UK’s 100 Best Shops Outside London:

We have visited Portobello Market to the point that a guide to this fabulous road was a must: Your Portobello Market Shopping Guide:

Our visits to the Frock Me! Vintage Fair in Chelsea and the Blackbird Tea Rooms in Brighton resulted in a trip to vintage clothing heaven and the most amazing afternoon tea experience:

… and the numerous visits to antique auctions have brought on so many interesting facts about antique furniture, accessories, jewellery and furnishing that you will find numerous blog posts about them:

So my dear, I hope that you will find the page of utmost use, and we warmly welcome all your thoughts and comments to make sure that it becomes as useful (and pretty) as possible!

A Portobello Market Jewellery Adventure

Portobello Market, Portobello Road, Notting Hill Vintage

One of the beautiful houses where Pembridge Road meets Portobello Road

Today’s post is very special, as we are visiting Portobello Market on an early Saturday morning, when all the traders are only just setting up their stalls and the air is filled with excitement ahead of the market day.  I arrived at Notting Hill Gate around 8am, as I would be accompanying one of the fine antique jewellery traders at his stall for a few hours.

The traders are busy setting up their stalls for the day

As I walked down Portobello Road I passed other stands that were just being set up.  The road was packed with parked vans that were being unloaded with all the glorious things that make up this legendary market every Saturday.

The wonderful food market on Portobello Road

I continued a bit further down past all the antique shops and came up to the famous food market, where the heavenly smell of newly baked bread filled the air, mixed with the sweet smell of strawberries, mangoes and the most exotic fruits and berries.

Vintage bags being unpacked at Portobello Road

I have written another post about Portobello Market – the guide to finding your way around there – but I think that every visit is so amazing as you always discover new things, stands and have a fun chat with some of the traders!

Portobello Market wonders

I just had to photograph the facades of the houses along Portobello Road, as the first morning sunshine hit them so beautifully with its warm light.

Antique Gold Rings, Portobello Market, London

Antique Gold Rings, Portobello Market, London

So the purpose of my visit was to show you the fine antique jewellery that is for sale at Portobello Market, and I think we should start with this collection of gold rings with various gemstones.  I love wearing big cocktail rings to parties as they can be so OTT – but then become beautiful statement pieces when worn with subtle outfits.

Art Nouveau diamond earrings, Portobello Market, London

Such a beautiful pair of Art Nouveau diamond earrings

I adore these Art Nouveau dropdown earrings with diamonds.  By now we are familiar with Art Nouveau-design, which is often very intricate with nature inspired shapes:

This is what fine antique jewellery displays often look like.  So much to choose from with a glorious range of gemstones, and precious metals.  You can also see some more period typical Art Nouveau jewellery in the middle and towards the top of this photo.  For example the locket where you insert a photo of a loved one (it is empty in the photo above).

Antique diamond dress clips

If you look closely at the picture above you can see a dress clip with diamonds in the middle of the picture.  Those were very popular around the turn of the century, among the fashionable ladies who would fasten them on each side of their dress, at the bottom of the dress straps at the front, to keep the dress sitting correctly.

At the top right of the photo you have a pair of golden earrings with amethysts, with the typical screw on earrings.  And need I even mention all the glorious cocktail rings on the far left at the back?

Antique engagement rings at Portobello Market

Antique engagement rings

For those of you hunting for antique engagement rings this is definitely the place to visit.  The traders are always happy to advise on the different designs and the price ranges go from a few hundred pounds up to… well I will leave that to your imagination!  Here are some sparkling beauties – accompanied by an Art Deco diamond and sapphire bracelet .  If anything in this – or any other post on the blog – takes your fancy, do not hesitate to get in touch with me and I will put you in touch with the right antique dealers.

I hope that inspires you to wear something fabulous this weekend my dear!

Vintage Bridal Couture by Jane Bourvis

Jane Bourvis vintage wedding dress designer

Jane Bourvis – 89 Golborne Road, W10 5NL, London

I came across Jane Bourvis’ beautiful designs the other day on one of my favourite vintage wedding blogs: Love My Dress.  Jane designed the most divine dress for one of the brides and I knew right away that a Decades of Elegance visit to her shop was looming.

Top hats, antique veils and lace creations adorn the shop window

Her shop is nestled in at the very end of Portobello Road, on the side street Golborne Road.  When you enter the atelier you enter vintage wedding dress heaven.  Old school beauty, elegance and romance – that every bride so deserves when looking for her perfect wedding dress – meets you upon your entrance:

Pearls, sequins and lace dresses from times gone by are getting new life here

Jane has taken on the task of restoring and recreating antique wedding dresses and she works with antique laces and recreates styles from the 20’s and the 30’s.  My favourite part about her designs is all the magic that she works upon lace, as I think that lace brings such a romantic yet elegant beauty to a wedding dress:

In the shop antique and vintage dresses can be found hanging from the walls and the ceilings, and everything is a work of art.  From the broken and restored dresses, to the bridal jewellery and antique photos.

Lovely old bridal accessories and photos give inspiration to all the brides that visit the shop

This beautiful old wedding dress hadn’t been properly looked after by its previous owners, so it is beyond the point of salvation, but bits and pieces can still be used to make a new dress.  For the time being it is kept in the window, where its beauty can be admired by all passersby:

I couldn’t help but notice this beautiful, empire cut dress, which would make such a beautiful bridesmaid’s dress.  See how sheer the chiffon fabric is, and what a romantic subtle colour it is:

I loved these old wedding photos with all the beautiful accessories so beautifully scattered around, giving brides-to-be inspiration:

An old photo shows us what the dress looked like when it was worn for the first time…

We also fell head over heels over some stunning lace veils that Jane has brought back from France.  She travels around the country to find the perfect pieces, brings them back to her atelier and adds her own touch to the designs to make them just perfect.

I love how they have hung this parasol from the ceiling – yet another small detail that adds to the beauty of the shop.  The colours and design of the parasol go so well with the rest of the beautiful designs in the atelier.

The back of the shop is where our blushing brides-to-be are trying on these beautiful creations.  The room is decorated in vintage dresses and antique veils – one more beautiful than the other:

Kleanthous Antiques at Lapada Art and Antiques Fair

On Friday I visited the most beautiful antique fair so far on my antique journey; the Lapada Art and Antiques Fair in Berkeley Square, London.  Walking through Berkeley Square earlier in the week I was able to see how they assembled a great white “tent” where the fair would take place, but when I finally entered it was like going into a real building – absolutely beautiful!

The first antique dealer that we are visiting is Kleanthous Antiques est. 1969.  Now, I can’t even begin to count the number of people I know who have a vintage watch at the top of their wish list – their “one day” dream.  Well, I would recommend that you pay these guys a visit on 144 Portobello Road, as their selection is just amazing – for the gents as well as for the ladies:

Vintage watches: Rolex, Cartier, Patek Philippe, Jaeger Le Coultre: Reverso & Memovox, Vacheron & Constantin, Kleanthous Antiques, Lapada Art & Antiques Fair

Rolex, Cartier, Patek Philippe, Jaeger Le Coultre: Reverso & Memovox, Vacheron & Constantin… heaven for the vintage watch lover…

At the moment their watch collection is apparently at its best, and below is a very special Rolex Prince, with its original certificate:

My friend and I however fell in love with their ladies’ watches, and she was immediately drawn to this 1920’s Art Deco diamond watch:

I ADORE the black strap as it is such an unmistakable Art Deco design.  It brings my thoughts to 1920’s headpieces with the black bands and the sparkling jewellery.  I must say that this is the most beautiful watch that I have ever seen, and of course, when my friend tried it on, she never wanted to take it off again:

As mentioned, you can find this amazing collection on Portobello Road, and you can also visit their website here for some more info and photos.  We will visit a few more deals at the antique fair later on this week so stay tuned!

Annie Vintage on Portobello Road

The other week I popped by Portobello Market, as I had heard of a fabulous vintage jewellery shop called Annie Vintage:

Vintage bracelets at Annie Vintage on Portobello Road

Annie’s collection is perfect for those of you who adore Serena van der Woodsen’s style in Gossip Girl.  There is an abundance of statement jewellery, gold coloured chains and lots of colourful stones that would go so well with a pair of skinny jeans, a nice white blouse or t-shirt and some killer heels – or a pair of boots once autumn is here again.

Vintage cameo pendants – love the beautifully designed dancers.  As always with vintage jewellery a lot of thought and time have gone into creating the pieces

Vintage necklaces at Annie Vintage on Portobello Road

Stunning vintage necklaces

I just love this necklace, it makes me think of Audrey Hepburn with her wonderful sense of style.  It would add just the right kind of glamour and style to an office outfit so I would wear it with a white blouse and a black pencil skirt, or with a little black dress.

Extraordinary vintage necklace

Vintage necklaces and bracelets

These chunky pieces are the perfect addition to for example a simple black maxi dress.  I usually wear one piece of jewellery and keep the rest quite simple.  So with a vintage pearl necklace I would wear a small pair of pearl earrings.  If my earrings are quite prominent then I might wear an eye-catching ring, but I would tone down (or most likely skip) the necklace.  I was told the other day that this is how the French ladies do it, and we know how impeccable their sense of style is, so if you follow this philosophy you just can’t get it wrong!

Oh it is just amazing being able to rummage through these boxes of vintage earrings.  I am a huge fan of pearl earrings and I can already see a few that I would like to take home.

1930’s Art Deco Pearl and Marcasite Ring

It is time for an old school Decades of Elegance-blog post, where I find a piece of jewellery, fall in love with it and share it with the rest of the world:

1930's art deco ring with marcasites and pearls

1930’s art deco ring with marcasites and pearls

I picked up this glorious 1930’s Art Deco ring at Portobello Market the other week.  It has this stunning 9ct gold band and comes with the most beautiful silver setting, adorned with marcasites and a pearl.  I love it when they mix gold and silver in a piece of jewellery because it makes it so wearable; you can to mix and match the rest of your outfit and jewellery to your heart’s content without having to worry about wearing only either gold or silver!

1930's art deco ring with marcasites and pearls

1930’s art deco ring with marcasites and pearls

I bought the ring at the same time as the Art Deco ring with a black onyx from the Audrey Hepburn-style birthday girl-blog post.  That ring has found a loving home in Sweden as the birthday girl could in no way part from it, which I think is wonderful – they were a match made in Art Deco heaven!

As for this beauty: in the photos above you can see how I have matched it up with some nautical colours and red lipstick, as I thought it was the perfect complement to the elegant design of the ring.

It is up for sale at the moment, so give me a shout (info@decadesoelegance.com) if you have any questions.  Enjoy your Monday dear!

Hmm… there is something terribly familiar about the bracelet above…

Cartier style leopard bracelet

Cartier style bracelet

Oh yes, you might recognise this as one of our favourite bracelets – the Cartier-style leopard from Portobello Market!  He has found such a loving home and will now be worn around London by one of the most stylish ladies I know.  She often features as my model here on the blog and with her incredibly edgy and spot-on sense of style she will be able to carry off this lovely piece just the way it deserves!

Leopard bracelet from Portobello Market

I was considering making the bracelet smaller, as you can see it is rather wide.  My friend K however pointed out how beautifully drapes down over her hand and becomes a piece of hand jewellery as well, with that cheeky little paw stretching down to the left in the photo above.

I am absolutely delighted that the two have become a match and I can promise you that I will be on the lookout for similar pieces, as it is all about the statements pieces now ladies!

What do you think about statement jewellery?  Do you prefer dainty pieces or massive bling like above?

Your Portobello Market Shopping Guide

As you know by now, I spend far too much time on Portobello Road, scavenging the vintage stands and roaming through the arcades, so I decided to do something useful with all this knowledge – and would now like to present to you your own Portobello Market Shopping Guide.  Hopefully this will make it easier for you to find your way around the market and locate that specific vintage piece that you have your heart set on, may it be a handbag or shoes or jewellery or clothing!  (You will find a google map at the end of the post to help you navigate your way around!)

A Sweet Introduction Pembridge Road to Chepstow Villas

For those of us who fell in love with Notting Hill when watching the Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant-movie, the beginning part of Portobello Road gives us just the beautiful welcoming that we were hoping for: quaint and colourful little houses with doors to match and stunning trees in bloom:

The front doors in Notting Hill are so pretty with their glorious colours!

There are a few stalls plotted around this part of the road as well, mostly souvenirs stalls, but I tend to find that the row of houses is what you end up admiring.

These comical signs are always a favourite when you can’t decide what to buy someone for their birthday!

Antiques – Chepstow Villas to Elgin Crescent

On Saturdays this stretch of Portobello Market is lined with vintage and antique stalls and you can get your hands on everything from 1950s toy cars, vintage boxing gloves, silver, jewellery to antique clocks, hats…  Some traders are also here on Fridays but Saturday is the main market day.

I would suggest that you get there at about 10am, because I have made the mistake of showing up super early to see all the goodies, only to realise that half the traders haven’t even arrived yet – let alone set up their stalls!  After 4pm many of them have started closing down (some even earlier) but some troopers are still going until after 5pm.

Be patient and you can find some beautiful pieces.  It is hard to know what is old and what is new – which is why I am here to tell you all about it!

All the styles of crockery – perfect for anyone dreaming of an Alice in Wonderland -tea party!

This section of the market is like roaming through grandma’s wardrobe and we love it all!

Do make sure to pop into one of the arcades behind the stalls, to check out the more high end jewellery traders’ collections.  These guys operate on a more typical trader schedule, which means that they will be there from 8am until maybe 3pm – it depends a bit from trader to trader.  The rows of jewels that meet your eye are however breathtaking so it is definitely worth a visit!

When your powers start to run out just reload with amazing crêpes from one of the stalls.  It will be loaded with nutella and bananas, or lemon and sugar, whatever takes your fancy… mmm!

Food from all corners of the world  Elgin Crescent to Talbot Road

Freshly baked bread… the smell is just divine and you will end up buying everything!

Fresh fruit and vegetables for a fraction of the supermarket price – and it always tastes so much better when you have handpicked it whilst listening to someone shouting ‘five apples for 50p ladies and gentlemen!’

Oh man, I love this part of the market, where the stalls are buckling under the weight of fresh butternut squash, juicy tomatoes, papayas, lychees… every fruit and vegetable you can think of!  Some stalls sell freshly baked bread and others make paella and serve with a smell so divine you won’t know what to do with yourself!  (Did I forget to mention I am also a total foodie?!)

You can of course also get your hands on some gorgeous flowers on this section of Portobello Road

and fashion is of course a recurring theme all along Portobello Market!

An eclectic mixture of everything –  Talbot Road to under the Westway Bridge

This section of the road has a wonderful mix of everything, from modern to vintage, to a Tesco supermarket, cheap mobile phone covers and random gadgets… but don’t make the common tourist mistake here of turning around here, thinking you have seen at all the vintage stuff.  Instead, do continue reading and walking, as towards the end we will get to some very stunning second hand and vintage shops and stalls.

The fabulous Notting Hill bag which you can buy all over the market!

Some of the shops just keep surprising, as they might not look special from the outside, but once you step inside a whole new world of things you didn’t know you needed, are for sale.  These pictures are from Sitara on 245 Portobello Road London W11 1LT.

I absolutely love mannequins and one day I will have one or two in my walk-in-closet – well, that is the dream!

Second Hand Fashion Portobello Road to Ladbroke Grove, after the bridge

When you have walked further than you think you ought to you will get to the Westway Bridge.  Go under the bridge and you will find to your left a Second Hand Fashion-heaven opening up, and carrying on all the way to Ladbroke Grove:

Stunning handbags

You can spend hours just browsing through the beautiful pieces that the knowledgable traders have searched high and low for

Patterns, colours and materials that have stood the test of time

If you ask the trader about the garments they are often able to tell you the most fascinating facts and stories

Second Hand and Vintage Clothes and Furniture – Cambridge Gardens to Oxford Gardens

This part of Portobello Road is always less crowded than the rest, as the road is oh so very long, and everyone don’t have the energy to go all the way to the end.  Most people don’t even know that there are still treasures to be discovered once you get past the Westway bridge!

Heaven for a true vintage lover, with heaps of bags, shoes and belts!

My friend Lee and I ventured all the way there though (mostly as we were heading to the glorious Thai Rice for some well deserved lunch) and she ended up buying the most gorgeous leather bag, which made the wander totally worth it:

A gorgeous vintage find from one of the stalls between Cambridge Gardens and Oxford Gardens

I would love to read about your experiences from Portobello Market – what you bought or what you thought about the market.  Did you have some exotic food and was it very busy when you were there?  Or maybe you haven’t visited yet but are longing to go?  Do leave me a comment below dear, I can’t wait to hear from you!
