Carved Turquoise Earrings

Yesterday a customer came into the antique jewellery shop where I work and wanted to try on a pair of turquoise earrings from our window.  I went to get them out and judge by my delight when I realised that I hadn’t actually seen them before (it is always exciting when new jewellery comes into the shop, as every piece teaches you something new) and I loved them!  Let’s take a closer look:

Turquoise, emerald and diamond earrings, Art Deco

Turquoise, emerald and diamond earrings from Moira Fine Jewellery

You guys probably by now know my love for the Turquoise stone, which has been my grandmother’s favourite all these years.  She is so cute when she dresses up in a turquoise outfit top to toe and wears some turquoise jewellery with that – and a hat, always a hat!

Okay so back to the earrings: we weren’t completely sure of their age, but to me they look like your typical 1920s – or even 1910 – design, which is given away by that beautiful millegrain setting (when then metal is pulled up into tiny little beads along the edge).  At the top we have a natural pearl, which is a very rare thing these days and tends to fetch top dollars.  Suspended from the pearl is a diamond and emerald set cap withand on the bottom a carved Persian turquoise.

So these beauties are from Moira Fine Jewellery and I suspect that they won’t be sticking around in the shop for too long so I intend to spend all of today looking at them.

Have a lovely day my dear!

Jewellery Collection Essentials

Hello dear!  So I have come across quite a few blog posts on the topic Your Wardrobe Essentials – you know the usual drill of  ‘a crisp white shirt, a black pencil skirt, a pair of skinny jeans, a pair of black trousers, the perfect white t-shirt, a black cardigan, a trench coat’ etc.  How very not exciting I say – and would like to introduce to you my take on ‘Your Jewellery Collection Essentials‘!

Blue topaz earrings vintage style

A pair of my jewellery wardrobe staples – a pair of blue topaz beauties, vintage style from South Africa

These are all pieces that I have found myself using on a regular basis, and of course, if you decide to invest in any of these items I would encourage you to go for vintage or antique.  When you look through your jewellery collection to see what pieces you already have, remember to include jewellery that you have inherited from your grandmother(s).  These often become the most treasured ones, and even though you might want to keep them safe and locked away, keep in mind that they were made to be worn, loved and admired!

Frock Me! Vintage Fair

Make a list in your head of the pieces of jewellery that you know that you will be using on a regular basis, and when you get to your next vintage jewellery fair or shop you will know what you should look for!  The above photo is from the Frock Me! Vintage Fashion Fair

1. Pearl Earrings

By adding a pair of (in my case preferably white) pearl earrings to your outfit, you can transform a whole look!  A plain office outfit becomes all that more sophisticated; a little black dress gets an air of Audrey Hepburn elegance; and a cocktail dress becomes oh so glamorous!  It is my firm opinion that pearl earrings are a must in every girl’s jewellery wardrobe.  You can vary the sizes so that you have a pair of smaller pearls as well as the larger ones, as different sized pearls bring different looks to yours outfits.

2. Pearl Necklace

This one goes hand-in-hand with the pearl earrings and I just love wearing pearl earrings and a pearl necklace together.  Try to match the sizes of the pearls in the earrings and necklaces for good balance – but have fun while playing around with them!  I just love the Sex and the City movie scene where Carries tries on the Lanvin wedding dress (Google search for it here) and that big, chunky pearl necklace!  Not to mention when she is draped in pearls with the Christian Lacroix dress! (Google results here)

3. Gold Earrings

For an outfit in warm colours, gold jewellery is just such a wonderful choice.  Either go for small golden earrings or a pair of golden earrings with a small stone, for example a turquoise, diamond or even a pearl.  I tend to keep my everyday earrings quite small so that they match a simple and elegant necklace – without stealing the show!

4. Gold Necklace

Something elegant and understated that goes with your golden earrings.  The beauty here is that you have a sea of different styles to choose from: will you choose a gold pendant or a small sparkling stone that complements the gold?  Or a necklace where the chain is the main detail?  I have always known that gold chain necklaces don’t suit me, so judge by my dread when I was asked to try one on in the shop the other day to show a client!  I was then so surprised to see that it actually suited me, and that I liked the look!  So again, have a play around with the different styles as you might get surprised as to what suits you best!

3. Silver Coloured Earrings

Silver, white gold and platinum are especially perfect when you wear an outfit featuring cold colours (blues, greens etc) but they do of course go very well with everything.  Silver coloured earrings that come with a bit of sparkle, such as diamonds or Swarovski crystals, are always a lovely choice.  I tend to go for the smaller ones as I love the subtle glitter, and they are perfect for matching up with a pretty silver necklace.

4. Silver Necklace

You can either go for a classic silver chain necklace, one with a silver details or something with a small sparkling stone.  I have found that I don’t wear sets very often – pre-matched jewellery – but I tend to mix and match my pieces so that my earrings for example carry a bit of sparkle, while the necklace is then just plain silver, like my Tiffany bow below:

5. Bracelet

When it comes to bracelets the choice is a bit wider: you don’t wear the bracelet right next to the rest of the jewellery so do play around a bit more with colours, metals and stones.  For example, if I am wearing gold jewellery I often wear my great aunt’s Kalevala bracelet – an old Finnish design in brass, in the far right photo below.  Kalevala is a fascinating brand so we will come back to that in a later post!

6. Rings

Rings are such fun and there are so many different styles to mention:

  • Cocktail Rings, my favourite rings that keep coming back here on the blog as they are sooo gorgeous and fun to play around with:
  • For those of you who are married or engaged I am sure that your Engagement Ring and Wedding Ring are the biggest parts of your jewellery-outfit.  And yes, I am still planning to write a guide to buying a vintage engagement ring one day, so watch this space!
  • A friend of mine brought to my attention to the beauty of wearing lots of elegant silver rings, and you might remember that I recreated the look in an older posts: Knitted Gloves and Silver Rings.

Have a play around with you rings and pair them up with something unexpected, like a pair of old cut-off knitted gloves

6.  Statement Necklace

It is always a good idea to invest in a statement necklace that goes with many different outfits – which is not very hard as this piece is meant to stand out!  It means that you can be bold with colours and don’t hold back on the sparkle!

I hope you enjoyed this alternative version of wardrobe essentials and I would love to hear what your jewellery essentials are?  Do you have a special piece of jewellery that you wear every day?

Bumped Up Hairstyle with Loose Waves

Today we are looking at a fabulous and super easy hairdo that my friend Lady L wore to our afternoon tea last week:

Bumped up hair with loose waves

She wanted an elegant look for the occasion and since we love hairstyles that don’t take forever to do, we decided to go for this bumped up look with some gloriously loose waves:

Bumped up hair with loose waves

Who needs to create a windswept hairstyle when you can just spend a winter in London?!

Start out using a curling iron to create soft curls that go from the height of your ears and down, and make them approximately two centimeter wide.  When done you can run your fingers through the waves to make them soft and loose, and remember to give them a misting of hairspray.

After that gather a wide part of your hair at the front and tease the underside of it to create a bump on the top of your head – spray some hairspray into the teased part to make it stay.  Pull the whole section up and back softly to get that stunning bump, then twist the ends at the crown of your head and pin with two criss-crossed hair pins (as you can see in the photo below).  Spray liberally with hairspray to make sure that it stays up all day and night!

Bumped up hair with loose waves

You can always add a vintage brooch or a hair accessory at the back – it creates such an elegant look!

I just loved the look of this mother-of-pearl coloured dress and these vintage paste earrings!

Our lovely lady here went for a classic makeup look with some light pink lip gloss to perfect her fair complexion.  She also wore a pair of Decades of Elegance 1920’s style sparkling earrings – such a fabulous look for an afternoon tea excursion!

A sparkling Christmas party at Grays Antique Centre

We received a lovely invitation to a Christmas party at Grays Antique Centre last week, which really put the sparkle into this year’s Christmas!

Grays Antique Centre is based in Mayfair, just by Bond Street tube station and with Christmas coming up it is such a wonderful place to find some very special presents for your loved ones.  You can get everything from very high-end pieces of jewellery (diamonds, emeralds, amethysts etc) to very reasonably priced costume jewellery – from all the glorious decades gone by!

I stopped by Westleigh Antiques and had a lovely chat with the trader there – and I just couldn’t take my eyes off the most stunning pieces antique and antique-style jewellery!  I was especially delighted to see the most glorious cocktail rings shimmering and sparkling back at me:

An English pearl necklace finds a home in Dubai

Freshwater pearl necklace, floating pearls, Christique Antique

Floating pearl necklace from Christique and freshwater pearl earrings from Pop Up Vintage Fairs

I bought this freshwater pearl necklace from our favourite Christique Antique Centre in Dorking as a belated birthday present for a friend who now lives in sunny Dubai.  I decided to match the necklace with some earrings and found these lovely pearls at Pop Up Vintage Fairs, at Spitalfields Market.  You really can’t go wrong with pearls as a present, as it is my firm belief that every girl needs a good collection of pearl jewellery!

The gleam of the pearls is highlighted by her lovely blonde hair and tan

I was so delighted that they suited her so well, and I am only slightly jealous that she has been wearing them whilst sipping on cocktails here:

Stunning treasures at Jewel Tree in Cape Town

Today I would like to introduce you to my favourite antique jewellery shop in Cape Town – Jewel Tree.  Whenever I visit this shop, I end up spending at least an hour in there, listening to the fascinating stories that the dealers have to tell, and admiring their most extraordinary treasures.  They have everything from Victorian bracelets to dazzling Tanzanite earrings to Art Deco diamond rings… the list goes on!

Come along dear, let’s take a closer look:

Such an exquisite design – and gold always looks so regal with red stones… garnets and rubies in particular!

Victorian gold bangle with diamonds and rubies

The condition of these old pieces is just extraordinary: they are over a hundred years old, yet they still shine and sparkle as if they were made yesterday.  I love losing myself in this sea of gold, rubies, garnets, pearls, diamonds and imagining what these pieces have been through during all these years.  It is so interesting to learn about all these extraordinary details – like little lockets that open up and reveal a secret compartment, old photos of someone’s loved ones and clever little hinges and designs that makes so much sense once someone explains their purpose!

Oh my favourite combination of gold and pearls make up this stunning bracelet

My favourite antique piece was a gold locket from London that opened up and contained a very small piece of cloth, which used to be scented about a hundred years ago.  The wearer would open the locket and sniff the little cloth whenever the smells from the streets of London would be too gruesome!  How clever indeed – it shows how inventive people are how designs change through times to suit our lifestyles.

Stunning antique Tanzanite rings

Above we have two absolutely glorious tanzanite rings with diamonds – love the design and the incredible sparkle!  We will look closer at Tanzanite in another post, as it is such a beautiful gemstone but apparently it is running out!  I do however keep running into the most extraordinary Tanzanite jewellery in South Africa, and it is such a treat to be able to show them to you.

Adore this collection of earrings… contemporary in antique style, and really affordable – maybe a Christmas present for your lady? *hint* *hint*

They also have a range of contemporary jewellery that are made in antique style – Edwardian, Victorian, Art Deco etc.  The designs are so beautiful as you can see above and below, and since they do not contain for example diamonds, they stay within a very reasonable price bracket; yet they look like they should cost at least ten times their price!

Well guess who these drop down earrings went home with?  I just couldn’t resist the stunning design: the blue topaz center stones are so beautifully highlighted by the sparkling cubic zirconias

Aside from the jewellery they also do other decorative pieces: a set of six matcing Russian silver-gilt enameled teaspoons, marked 84 c.1895.

They also have a stunning collection of antique china…

Your Secret Jewellery Collection – the Indian chapter part II

We are diving right back into a friend’s jewellery collection and today we are getting to lay eyes on some stunning rubies:

Indian Vintage Jewellery, Rubies, Diamonds and Silver

Indian Vintage Jewellery, Rubies, Diamonds and Silver

The earrings were a wedding gift from her aunt and are so beautifully adorned with rubies and diamonds.  They are modern pieces but they design goes very far back in time.  The style is north Indian, and men often wear this teardrop-shaped jewellery on their hats as an emblem.

It is common for rich Indian families to sell off parts of their jewellery collections when their finances get a bit shaky and there are specific shops around that buy these pieces.  My friend bought the necklace above from one of these shops – which also sold lots of beautiful antiques – when she was visiting Jaipur.  Once you buy your jewellery they will polish it and bring it to you, so hers was delivered to her when she was at The Oberoi Rajvilas, in Rajastahn (oh do check out the link – you will want to visit India in a heartbeat !).  The story is just so romantic; she was wearing a sari and having a sophisticated martini with her husband, when the shopkeeper came up to her and brought out a box of rubies.  There were ten or so people in the bar and everyone went silent and stopped to stare.  Pretty sure she must have felt like an Indian princess!

Apparently these rubies are not as expensive as Burmese rubies, which is why you can buy such a vast amount of them.  Her darling husband has promised her one new string of rubies every time they visit India – awww!

The necklace has a very typical Indian adjustable string and consists of approximately 400 carats of rubies

Your Secret Jewellery Collection – the Indian chapter part I

So Your Secret Jewellery Collection is back by popular demand, and today we are visiting a dear friend of mine who has the most beautiful collection of Indian vintage jewellery.  Let’s start by checking out her divine dressing table – antique of course:

Vintage dressing table

Antique French dressing table – turn of the century

The dressing table is turn of the century French antique, and was found in a vintage shop on Battersea Park Road which I am very jealous about as I sure can’t ever seem to find treasures like this when I go scouting around markets and fairs…!

One day I will definitely get a dressing table, as I cannot wait to be able to sit down on the matching vintage seat, see all the beautiful perfumes, bottles and powders all lined up in front of the mirror – not to mention the beautiful jewellery surrounding it all… how very old Hollywood glamourous indeed!

So over to the jewellery: these beautiful drop down vintage earrings were just waiting to be shown off in all their splendour!  I would guess that they are Art Deco, and I wouldn’t be surprised if we find out that they are from the 20’s.  They are just so beautiful with the intricate yet structured design, which appeals to so many of us – oh yes, that is the beauty of Art Deco.

Vintage earrings from India

These Indian vintage earrings look like they are made out of the heaven and the skies, and so perfectly carried by this beautiful lady!

I love this picture of our Indian Princess!  I think that these earrings would look just gorgeous when paired up with an elegant yet understated silk dress, which would really bring out their beauty and give them the centre place that they so well deserve.

Thank you dear for sharing, and we look forward to the next Chapter of the collection!  You can see the other Your Secret Jewellery Collection-posts here!

You Beautiful Turquoise

Looking through my photos from this summer I came across a few with turquoise jewellery, which made me start thinking about this beautiful gemstone, where it comes from and what its history might be…

Turquoise Antique Brooch

Antique Turquoise Brooch – from our favourite old house in Sweden – A Window Into Early 20th Century Sweden

Turquoise means Turkish Stone, as it came to Europe via Turkey back in the days.  It is one of our oldest amulets used for protection, it has been used as an ornamental stone for thousands of years and in ancient cultures it was seen a symbol of wealth.  The ancient Egyptians were great fans and loved adorning their jewellery with it.

The sky-blue turquoise was most popular in Europe in the early Victorian period and it is rather safe to say that it has not yet lost its appeal!  It was mined over 6000 years ago in Sinai (1), but these days many would say that the best turquoise can be found in Iran, even though a lot of it comes from Mexico and the US.

Turquoise Antique Brooch

I adore this brooch and I think it stands out so beautifully when worn in blonde hair.  I can however imagine that it would look even more striking against dark hair!

I love finding out how jewellery differs across countries and continents, and turquoise does not disappoint:  in the Middle East it is traditionally set in gold and sometimes the jewellery also includes diamonds.  In the Western world silver settings are popular, especially in the US.

Turquoise is also also the most common component in Native American jewellery, and archaeologists believe that the Navajo Indians started mining turquoise thousands of years ago (2).  I started researching Navajo Jewellery for this post and will have to write a separate post on it as the history is incredibly fascinating!

Forget-me-not she said

Every girl needs a bit of sparkle and shimmer in her life, and these Dior-style earrings are just what the doctor ordered today:

You know I encourage mixing a downplayed outfit with glamorous jewellery, to get that wonderful chic, yet laid-back style.  These gorgeous vintage earrings bring thoughts to Dior-design, who do glamour like no one else!

I have also been treading through charts of the colour blue to pin down the exact shade for these, but I don’t think any shade captures the intense blue colour which almost shifts into purple below.  I did however think it went so beautifully with these lovely forget-me-nots, which I wanted to share with you.  A beautiful spring-garden in bloom:

… and yes, these beauties are up for sale, so get in touch if you can’t live another weekend without them!
