Mid-Victorian French jet necklace worn with black Tiger of Sweden jeans and a Massimo Dutti top. And yes, it started pouring down by Selfridges today after lunch, so the Cath Kidson umbrella also made an appearance!

They reflect beautifully in the sunlight – and even in the rain!
This black bead necklace is made of black jet and comes from the mid-Victorian times, which makes it approximately 150 years old! It is a piece of Mourning Jewellery; black jewellery widely worn after the death of Prince Albert in 1861. At the time Queen Victoria dressed in black and wore only black jewellery for decades to show that she was grieving – a style also followed by the people.
French Jet is coloured glass, initially made to imitate real jet, but it possesses a darker glitter and shine than the real thing.
This is a wonderful example of a piece of antique jewellery that I think is worth investing in today, as it can be worn with any modern day outfit without dating it. You will even be able to pass it along to your children – if you look after it well – and there will always be an interesting story to tell around the dinner table when you have it draped around your neck!
